Actian ParAccel Offers Streamlined SQL Access to Hadoop Data

Hortonworks Alliance and Support for HCatalog Power Advanced Analytics on Hadoop Data

Redwood City, Calif. – May 20, 2013 – Organizations are encountering significant challenges running advanced analytics on big data stored in Apache Hadoop. To address this need, Actian today announced general availability of its Hadoop On Demand Integration module v2.0 for ParAccel, including support for HCatalog, the centralized metadata repository supported in several distributions of Hadoop, notably Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP).

ParAccel’s enhanced On Demand Integration module establishes parallel, bi-directional connections between the ParAccel Analytic Platform and Hadoop, allowing analysts to access Hadoop data at query time without an additional integration process or tool. Now organizations can leverage existing SQL skill sets and business intelligence tools on Hadoop data using the full spectrum of SQL functions. With a single SQL query, any analyst can run high-performance, advanced analytics across data in Hadoop and other corporate data sources.

This release also marks a milestone in an established alliance between the ParAccel team and Hortonworks, the only 100 percent open source data management platform for Apache Hadoop.

“Together, Hortonworks Data Platform and ParAccel Analytic Platform offer an integrated big data management and analytics solution that is cost-effective and quickly returns value for our shared customers,” said Mitch Ferguson, vice president of business development at Hortonworks. “With ParAccel’s support for HCatalog, companies can effectively target specific Hadoop data for analysis, running any SQL query and getting results in record time.”

Hadoop is often used to process and store large amounts of incoming data, particularly “semi-structured” and unstructured data such as weblogs or machine sensor data. To make analysis in Hadoop less complex, analysts can write a SQL query to ParAccel Analytic Platform, which accesses Hadoop data via the On-Demand Integration module and moves it into ParAccel for analysis. Parallel connections and optional HCatalog support enable the most efficient data movement between Hadoop and ParAccel, filtering and moving only the subset of data needed for a particular analysis right at query time, without a secondary process or tool. The ParAccel Hadoop On Demand Integration module gives analysts inline SQL access to big data to run advanced analytic functions, such as predictive analytics, market basket functions, pattern matching and social-aware text analytics.

“The integrated ParAccel-Hortonworks solution enables our mutual customers to unlock value from big data faster by making it easy and accessible to run SQL on data stored in Hadoop or other data sources. The combination brings together two extremely cost-effective platforms to maximize big data ROI,” said Rich Ghiossi, vice president of marketing for ParAccel.

Technology leaders from the companies will further discuss the combined solution in a webinar and live demo on May 21, 2013 10 a.m. PDT.

ParAccel and Hortonworks already share several customers. The most common use case of the combined platforms has been an “operational data refinery” model, leveraging Hortonworks HDP for Hadoop, while using ParAccel for high-performance big data analytics.

The ParAccel Hadoop On Demand Integration module is generally available now. For pricing and additional information, please contact ParAccel.

ParAccel Announces New Analytic Functions for Accessible, Usable, High-Performance Analytics on Big Data

Campbell, Calif. – February 27, 2013 – For CIOs and business leaders, analytics are now a top priority for creating value from their business data. Historically, analytic activities have been divided within organizations – between business reporting and data scientists. Today, there is a need for analytic capabilities in between these two extremes that make an immediate business impact and deliver value. To address this need, ParAccel today announced a new analytics program and new analytic functions available on its high-performance analytic platform.

ParAccel is committed to an accelerated rate of innovation in analytics with dedicated development program and a separate release cycle for new analytic functions. In its first release under the new program, ParAccel announced new text, transformation, and “task” analytics. These functions allow users to speed time to analytic value by reducing data preparation and turning formerly complex analysis into simple routines. With the unique integration features of ParAccel’s platform, analysts can now execute these new analytic functions on data that is often hidden in Hadoop or data warehouses.

“Every customer who installs ParAccel quickly discovers the potential for analytics on the highest performing analytics engine,” said Rich Ghiossi, vice president of marketing at ParAccel. “ParAccel is committed to increasing our investment in analytics, high speed innovation, and continual value creation for our customers.”

The new analytic functions include social-aware text analytics to provide immediate insight into social media feeds, warranty files, customer comments, insurance claims, and other text-driven applications. Transformational functions like sessionization and a JSON parser automate high speed alteration of web application data, making it immediately usable for analytics. In addition, task analytics like pattern match and can be used for segmentation, profiling, sentiment, and fraud prevention.

ParAccel has optimized all the analytic functions to be fast, interactive, cost-effective and drive value. The platform already supports over 500 statistical, data mining and finance functions, but emerging use cases demonstrate the need for even more analytics that deliver immediate business value throughout an organization.

The new analytic functions will be generally available within the first half of 2013.

ParAccel Helps Customers Keep Costs Down While Data Volumes Grow

New Right to Deploy licensing enables unlimited use of ParAccel for any amount of data, users, or CPUs

Campbell, Calif. – February 12, 2013 – The information management industry is faced with the biggest opportunity in decades – big data. More data begets better insights and bigger value for companies who can effectively harness it using big data and analytic technology, most of which traditionally use “cost per terabyte” pricing models that increase prices to handle more data. To allow its customers to maximize the value from increased volumes of data, rather than suffer from constraints or further expense, ParAccel has introduced its Right to Deploy pricing model. This license agreement allows companies to deploy unlimited ParAccel technology within flexible parameters such as region, time period, business division or application area, instead of charging per terabyte or per user.

Under a single license, companies can license ParAccel for many use cases, including archiving of massive amounts of data, disaster recovery, analytic sandboxes, development environments, and more. Only ParAccel offers the unique right to deploy licensing option allowing companies to pay once and use as much of ParAccel as they want, with no limitations on data, analytics, users, or nodes.  This type of licensing opportunity is not available from ParAccel’s competitors, allowing customers freedom and flexibility around how much and what type of servers or storage are used, without incurring further expenses.

Along with “Per Node” pricing, this new offering gives ParAccel customers pricing flexibility to align their technology investment with the growth of their business.  ParAccel now expands deployment flexibility to four areas:

Processing Power: ParAccel’s technology is available both on-disk and in-memory. Companies can choose between high performance and extreme performance for real time analytics.

Location: Analytics can be run from commodity hardware on-premise, in the cloud, or in a hybrid model.

Delivery: ParAccel Analytic Platform can be delivered as software, directly to the data center, or delivered as an appliance. Both delivery models allow companies to load their data and start running queries immediately.

Licensing: Now, offering both node-by-node and Right to Deploy pricing models, ParAccel can optimize the pricing model to fit the unique needs of each customer.

“Our customers demand flexibility across the board, and pricing should be no different. While our competitors are charging for their software based on the amount of data, we took an innovative, customer-friendly approach with Right to Deploy licensing. This is one more step toward removing all barriers to what can be done with new data pouring in every second,” said Chuck Berger, chairman and CEO of ParAccel.

Right to Deploy pricing is available immediately for ParAccel Analytic Platform.

ParAccel Integration Extends Unconstrained Analytics to the Entire Datasphere

New On Demand Integration Unites Hadoop with All Data to Drive More Analytic Value

Campbell, Calif. – October 23, 2012 – Companies investing in big data technology have captured massive amounts of data, however big data file systems are proving to be difficult for running analytics and thus deriving little value from the data. To address this massive value vacuum, ParAccel, a leading enterprise analytics platform provider, today announced the next update to its Hadoop On Demand Integration (ODI) Module, as the next phase of its big data strategy for unconstrained analytics on Hadoop data. The module boasts deeper Hadoop integration, giving companies better leverage of their existing big data investments, more comprehensive and competitive analytics, and faster time to value creation.

In addition, ParAccel announced On Demand Integration Services, a database extension layer that opens up the power of its analytic platform so third parties can easily build ODI modules and continue to build out interactive connections to other platforms, applications, and data sources. ODI Services puts interactive analytics at the center of the data and technology universe compared to other approaches where analytic apps operated independently and data was inaccessible to the analyst or data scientist.

“The conversation about big data has quickly shifted to analytics and value creation,” says Mark Madsen, research analyst at Third Nature. “ParAccel’s ability to execute high-performance analytics on an integrated universe of big data is a unique offering in the market today. The ability to provide SQL access to Hadoop, and Hadoop access to ParAccel allows for a broader range of analytic processing than either platform can achieve alone.”

The improved ParAccel Hadoop ODI makes ParAccel the first analytic platform to enable unconstrained analytics on the entire datasphere, connecting both relational and non-relational data for increased depth and value. New advancements include bi-directional sharing of data and processes with Hadoop, integration with HCatalog for metadata exchange, and certification on Cloudera’s Distribution Including Apache Hadoop (CDH) (see ParAccel Cloudera partner brief).

ParAccel ODI Services provide a simple Application Programming Interface (API) to allow developers to leverage all of the parallelism, optimization, and execution of the ParAccel Analytic Platform for new ODI modules. Customers, partners, and developers will be able to rapidly develop and deploy new ODI modules, transform data in near real-time (2.5 million rows per second), and combine various remote data sources and applications for deeper analysis and richer analytic value.

“Our customers continue to push the limits of what can be done with analytics,” said Chuck Berger, CEO at ParAccel.  “This expansion of our analytic platform to connect data everywhere will deliver deeper, more meaningful insight and sustainable competitive advantage. The new value equations is this: big data plus big analytics equals big value.”

“With the customer database at the core of our business, we consistently beat our competitors with more customer dimensions, more recent data, more sophisticated analytics, better matching, and quicker response times,” said Peter Rogers, vice president, technology at Merkle. “ParAccel currently allows our clients to match new customer records to 2.5 billion rows of customer data on a daily basis.”

The expanded application now stores 200 terabytes of raw data, compressing it down to 50 terabytes on ParAccel, giving Merkle the ability to offer its clients better matching options to fine tune its targeted marketing and improve conversion rates. The company has also added new regions, increased the number of analysts accessing their system, and moved to daily updates compared to previous weekly updates.

ParAccel’s massively parallel architecture allows Merkle to predict growth, scale in linear fashion, and add new clients with node-by-node expansion. This flexibility aligns the cost of infrastructure with revenue and customer requirements.

“Merkle originally selected ParAccel because of winning execution speed and price performance,” said Rogers, citing that the agency plans continued expansion of the application footprint because of ParAccel’s ongoing speed of innovation, new additions of in-database analytics, increased support of analytic functions, and on-demand integration of external data sources.

“Today’s consumers are more selective than ever and fundamentally this is changing the way companies target customers and promote their marketing campaigns,” said Chuck Berger, CEO at ParAccel.  “Merkle is a role model for the way analytics can help drive business innovation by tightening the focus on customer needs.”

Organizations are looking for ways to manage big data while making the most of their current technology investments. As a result, many have started to implement logical data warehouses or hybrid data ecosystems – architectures that allow data and workloads to migrate to the best suited platform. ParAccel Analytic Platform, with its on-demand integration modules released last month, enables organizations to implement this type of interactive environment while delivering high-performance analytics at any scale.

ParAccel 4.0 enables companies to execute analytics in dynamic and interactive environments with improved stability and performance increases of 15 percent:

  • Advanced Query Optimization tracks data properties all the way through the pipeline of query processing, speeding aggregation by more than 20 times
  • Interconnect Optimization includes a virtual hotwire feature that doubles data transmission throughput while using fewer CPU cycles
  • Advanced I/O Optimization uses an improved pre-fetch algorithm to adapt intelligently to changing workloads resulting in consistent performance improvement
  • New Hash Join Algorithms optimize the utilization of memory and dynamically change the execution strategy at run-time resulting in improved performance
  • Expanded Connections now support up to 5000 simultaneous, client connections to the ParAccel Analytic Platform
  • Interactive Workload Management introduces a persistent class of queries to ensure the performance of both short and long-running queries in an interactive environment
  • New Vacuum capability improves the maintenance of tables with large unsorted regions and eliminates internal fragmentation with a finer-grained, dynamic segmenting and merging technique

“If you consider how analytics have traditionally been run – offline, static, standalone – there’s a large gap that needs to be filled if organizations want to meet 21st century demands,” said Chuck Berger, CEO at ParAccel. “ParAccel Analytic Platform allows data scientists and business analysts to power through increasingly complex queries on massive amounts of data, in real-time. Thousands of users can now leverage all of the data in the enterprise and beyond for the new world of analytics.”

ParAccel 4.0 also extends support for built-in functions including new window functions and improved precision for analytic execution. In addition, ParAccel continues to add more SQL functionality including the support of more efficient ways to define tables that can be reused during the execution of a query. These combined features allow larger numbers of users to execute increasing numbers of queries in a highly interactive analytic environment.

For a full list of features with descriptions, please see the ParAccel 4.0 Fact Sheet.

ParAccel Offers Analytic Offload Solution to Accelerate Business Innovation for Oracle and Teradata Database Customers

Campbell, Calif. – June 28, 2012 – ParAccel, a leading enterprise analytics platform provider, today announced two new analytic offload solutions that bring high-performance analytics to existing data warehouse installations. The ParAccel Analytic Offload Solutions for Oracle and Teradata are a combination of the ParAccel Analytic Platform and a set of services that will help companies identify and then move analytic workloads from overworked data warehouses and large data marts to ParAccel’s Analytic Platform. Both solutions free up data warehouse resources and provide an environment for unconstrained analytics, allowing both IT and business analysts to invest more time and resources on strategic business initiatives.

As a core component to these solutions, ParAccel also announced the general availability of the ParAccel On Demand Integration Module for Teradata and ParAccel ODBC On Demand Integration (“ODI”) Module for Oracle.  These ODIs allow companies to seamlessly connect ParAccel Analytic Platform to an existing data warehouse or data mart and immediately receive dramatically better performance for their analytic workloads.

Offloading analytic workloads, which can account for up to 80 percent of the administrative overhead, will free up the data warehouse to support operational reporting and dashboards. In addition, the new platform enables unconstrained analytics where analysts are free to explore entire data sets as required by the business.

Solution Benefits:

  • 100 times better price performance; compared to the cost of expanding Teradata to support analytics
  • 100 times better performance; based on a 46 hour Oracle query that now runs in 30 seconds on ParAccel without any tuning
  • 400 percent productivity gains by analysts; based on a move from 80 percent of time spent gathering data to 80 percent of time doing analysis

“It’s important to let workloads gravitate to the platforms that handle them best,” said Shawn Rogers, research vice president at EMA. “There is no one platform that can do it all. To drive maximum value from data management investments the business analyst should be able to interact among data warehouse, analytic platform, and big data platform.”

Specifically targeted to support Teradata and Oracle data warehouse customers, the new On Demand Integration Modules are built to give analysts inline access to data in the data warehouse:

ParAccel On Demand Integration Module for Teradata

  • Inline data access using Teradata FastExport utility
  • High-speed, parallel data movement from data warehouse to analytic platform

ParAccel ODBC On Demand Integration Module

  • Inline data access to any relational database source, including Oracle
  • Standards based access to structured data

“Our customers want the freedom to do unconstrained analysis whenever the need arises, on whatever data they want,” said Paul Zolfaghari, chief operating officer, ParAccel. “Analytic Offload complements the investment they’ve already made in data warehousing, by giving them a collaborative computing environment where they can do analytics alongside their reporting and dashboard system.”

ParAccel Offers Hadoop Collaborative Solution for Big Data Analytics

Campbell, CALIF. – June 13, 2012 – ParAccel, a leading analytics platform, today announced a new solution that brings its high performance analytics to a collaborative computing environment for data warehouse tools and big data platforms. The ParAccel big data analytic solution creates new value by bringing corporate data and big data into an unconstrained analytic workspace. As a core component to this solution, ParAccel announced the general availability of the Hadoop On Demand Integration Module, a connector that applies the power of ParAccel’s analytic platform to Hadoop data or analytic results.

New Customers, Evernote and Alliance Health Networks, Deploy On-Demand Solution

ParAccel’s customers have deployed the big data analytic solution to profit from the increased time to value and power of their data:

  • Evernote, the fast growing web services company that helps people capture, store and access content anywhere, chose ParAccel based on the ability to run collaborative, unconstrained analysis across multiple data sets along with its fast integration with Hadoop.
  • Alliance Health Networks (AHN), a leading healthcare social media company, connecting people to others who share their health challenges, selected ParAccel in place of Hadoop. Compared to other databases and Hadoop, ParAccel demonstrated the ability to handle data volume, performance and data variety, all running on industry-standard hardware. AHN is using ParAccel to support deep analysis of the big data generated by activity in its social networks.

“We will deploy ParAccel to access and analyze all of Evernote’s data to improve customer acquisition, retention and experience on all our products,” said Nathan Johnson, manager of data warehouse and analytics, Evernote. “Hadoop by itself does not have the ability to answer questions quickly and feed reporting and dashboards, so we complemented that service with ParAccel’s high speed big data solution.”

“In order to deliver new value we need the ability to leverage all our information no matter where it is stored,” said Peter Nettesheim, vice president of business intelligence, Alliance Health Networks. “Through the use of unconstrained analytics and a collaborative computing approach made possible with ParAccel, we can drive our business with more information more effectively.”

Companies trying to run analytics on big data platforms can expect to eliminate the need for a major programming effort and platform support for growing data volume and variety, increasing complexity of analytics, and continually dynamic business and analytics requirements.

“Companies investing in big data are looking for ways to drive more value out of their investments,” said Rick Glick, vice president of customer and partner development, ParAccel. “The ParAccel big data analytic solution becomes the engine for strategic value, by creating a collaborative computing environment where they can run deep analytics alongside the archiving, filtering and transformation work of Hadoop.”

CARFAX drives Customer Loyalty and Fraud Prevention with ParAccel

ParAccel Analytic Platform Cuts Analytic Run Time from Months to Minutes

Campbell, CA — June 4, 2012 — ParAccel, Inc., a leading enterprise analytic platform provider, today announced that Carfax, the most trusted provider of vehicle history information, continues to drive customer loyalty and fraud prevention through new analytic applications using the ParAccel Analytic Platform. ParAccel serves as the foundation for Carfax’s internal data warehouse and provides the company greater speed and agility in delivering new analytics to the business. Carfax maintains the largest vehicle history database ever assembled, comprising over nine billion vehicle records from more than 34,000 sources. According to Paula Mueller, Carfax director of business intelligence, Carfax understands the value of their data as an asset and to the potential of creating analytic value for the business.

Carfax uses advanced analytics to support their sales and marketing organizations. Customer analytics took days to run on Carfax's previous data warehouse platform. Some of the more complex fraud analytics wouldn't complete at all. IT staff was spending an inordinate amount of time trying to tune the database and tweak the queries to get better performance. On ParAccel, the analytics that took days to run now run in under 20 minutes without any tuning. Most analytics run in 5-15 minutes versus hours or days. With less time spent on administration, the IT staff is moving faster to keep pace with the speed of business innovation.

"Speeding the delivery of valuable business analytics was the driving force behind choosing ParAccel," Mueller said. "When the business started getting their analytics on time, they were ecstatic! They are now pushing to move from monthly to daily processing—something that would not have been feasible before ParAccel—and they have no shortage of ideas for other ways we can leverage the platform to create business value."

"Carfax is using ParAccel to accelerate analytics in a way that brings IT and business together around innovation," said Rich Ghiossi, vice president of marketing at ParAccel. "Their use of analytics has not only motivated their sales team but has helped drive their business decisions and enhance their competitive advantage in the marketplace."

Carfax will be presenting at the upcoming TDWI Solution Summit "Big Data Analytics for Real-Time Business Advantage" from June 4-6 in San Diego, CA. During the presentation Carfax will discuss how using the ParAccel Analytic Platform allowed the company to deploy a data warehouse that accelerates complex customer and fraud analytics. Topics to be covered include how they quickly generated momentum for the use of analytics by the business and how analytic insights have added business value.
